Our next meeting for HWSNA is Thursday, October 29 at Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church, 501 South Douglas, at 7:00 p.m. Our neighborhood Police Officers Joe Arnold and David Barringer will be our guest speakers.
The Historic West Side Neighborhood Association (HWSNA) was established in the late 1970s, primarily to fight a zoning change that would have altered the residential character of the neighborhood. In 1983 the HWSNA convinced the city council to "down zone" the entire area to an "R-3," single-family zoning classification to stem the increasing conversion of homes into commercial uses and multi-family rental housing. Since that time the HWSNA has been a steady voice of continuity before the city planning commission and city council to maintain the residential character of the area. In addition to our advocacy on zoning issues, the HWSNA maintains a "house history" program and provides plaques that formally recognize notable houses. The organization sponsors an annual tour of homes in the area and spearheads several planting programs. In 2001 the name was officially changed from the West Side Neighborhood Association to the Historic West Side Neighborhood Association. The HWSNA is a non-profit organization. Our motto is "Preserve-Protect." The map below shows our boundaries.
A vote was taken in December 2005 to annex the area covered by the former North Washington Park Neighborhood Association. That area will now be part of the Historic West Side Neighborhood Association.
Our neighborhood police officers are Joe Arnold (cell 741-4782) and Dave Barringer (cell 652-2255)
If you need to contact the Springfield Police Department for a non-emergency issue call 788-8311. Please let the officer know if you would like to remain anonymous. In an emergency situation always dial 911.
Remember: Call the City to report problems. Action can be taken for overgrown lawns, abandoned vehicles, broken windows, trash piles, cars parked on front lawns, and other public safety issues that are ordinance violations. Fax information to Barb Jones at 789-2048 regarding lawn parking.
